Winterize Your Hair

There are so many wonderful things about winter. Holiday cheer, time with family, skiing trips, hot cocoa, and spending the day cooped up inside reading a book. On the flip side, there are quite a few unpleasant things about winter. Unpredictable temps, dry air, cold winds, and unlikely chance of snow. When braving the elements in the middle of winter, our nose, fingers, and toes aren’t the only things that suffer. Our hair can suffer real stress and damage from the elements during the cooler winter months. Dryness, brittleness, and breakage are real possibilities for your hair if not properly cared for when Jack Frost makes a visit to the south. What can you do to keep your hair shiny, healthy, and happy despite the cooler temperatures?

Hats
Cover up those tresses. In recent years, hats as a fashion accessory have made their way back onto the scene and are now a closet staple for many. Gone are the days of frumpy wool caps, and in their place are sleek, edgy fashion pieces that add to any outfit. Not only do they sauce up your outfit, they also protect your hair from wind, rain, and occasional snowflakes.

Deep Conditioners
Use these at least once a week to counteract the stress your hair experiences from facing the elements. You can purchase deep conditioning masks from your stylist or even make your own at home with egg yolk or coconut oil. That said, always consult your stylist before trying any DIY masks as each head of hair is unique.

Humidifiers
This is less of an obvious trick; however, a humidifier is a great addition to your room not only to keep your hair moisturized, but your skin as well. During the winter months, moisture disappears from the air. This dry environment can suck moisture from your hair and skin leaving it dry and brittle, making it susceptible to breakage.
